How to Compile a Database Twice as Fast (or faster) - MSDN

I am sure many of you including me have faced this problem when we try to compile our NAV objects. It take ages to compile if we do all object compile.

Now there is a little bit faster ( they say it is twice as faster) way to do this.

Updated System Requirements for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 Windows Client

The system requirements for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 have been updated in the MSDN Library. In the original version, the section for the Windows client contain misleading information about the supported operating systems.
This was a bug in the way that system requirements are gathered and tested, and we have changed the process accordingly. We are fully aware of the confusion that the misleading information about only supporting 64-bit editions has caused.

The Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 Windows client supports both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows

Correct and Cancel Posted Document in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015

Have you ever wanted to have a easy way of correct and cancel posted documents in NAV? Now with Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 this functionality is available. Currently it is only available in "Small Business" Role Center.

This feature only available for posted sales and purchase invoices and you need to have items in the posted invoice lines. That means you can only correct purchase and Sales posted invoices with items.

Addition to that if the invoice is based on a order then NAV will not allow you to correct the posted document and will show a warning to you.

When you press the "Correct" button on the ribbon system ask,

If you press yes it will allow you to correct the document.

So isn't this against the accounting rules and NAV standards?? No. Because even though you see this as allowing you to modify the current posted document NAV handle it with more care and tricky way.

NAV create a credit memo with same data and post it in the background, so that means you have reversed your transaction using a credit memo and the document which you are making the changes is a new document. Therefore this will not harm the account rules or NAV standards.

This will go same for "Cancel" as well. When you press the cancel button on the ribbon, NAV automatically create and post a credit memo to reverse the document.

If you want to create a credit memo to reverse a document, you can use the "Create Corrective Credit Memo" button on the ribbon. This will create a new credit memo and allow you to do the modification. Only different in this is that you need to manually post the created credit memo.

This is not the perfect and complete solution, but at least this is a very good start by NAV team.

Design Patterns - Microsoft Dynamics NAV

If you want and feel like reading and watch videos related to NAV design patterns follow the links below,

The NAV Design Patterns are software design solutions to common NAV business needs. Those solutions are generic enough to be applied in various places of the NAV application, with slight variations on implementation but mainly respecting the same base concepts.

If you are a software engineer or have done anything related to programming, I am sure you have heard the word Design Patterns. You might have used those design patterns when you are implementing and developing software.

But Design patterns in NAV? What is this design pattern topic and why we really need to know these?

Feel like reading more about these?? Read this blog post, It is very interesting and really a good move

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 Pricing and Licensing

This was taken from partnersource and if you want to read the original articel please find the link here.

PERPETUAL LICENSING
The Perpetual Licensing model, available on Microsoft Dynamics NAV and GP starting with version 2013, provides customers with a simplified, yet flexible, purchase experience. The entire solution can be licensed with as little as one and as much as four core components: The Starter Pack, the Extended Pack, the Full User and the Limited User. Additional configuration components are also available.

With Perpetual Licensing, you must license:

  • The solution functionality; and
  • Access to the solution functionality by your users
The right to deploy the ERP solution's core functionality is licensed through one required Pack and one optional Pack. The right for users to access the deployed ERP solution functionality is licensed through Client Access Licenses (CALs) with concurrent access rights. Please refer to the Software License Terms and the Licensing Guide for more information.

THE STARTER PACK

The required Starter Pack gives you core financials and distribution management functionality to help you:
  • Gain control and insights over your finances
  • Manage sales items and materials in a distribution environment
  • Provide licensed users a singular view of the business from virtually anywhere through a variety of devices
And, to top it off, the Starter Pack includes your first three Full Concurrent CALs. For some customers, the Starter Pack is the only module they'll ever need.

THE EXTENDED PACK
The optional and additive Extended Pack adds functionality that integrates the core financials and distribution management capabilities included in the Starter Pack with industry specific functionality extensions.

FULL CONCURRENT CAL
Full Concurrent CALs provide users full read and full write capabilities to all of the licensed solution functionality through any and all modes of access, including the Windows Client, the Web Client, the Microsoft SharePoint Client, or any other mode of access going through the API (including Web Services).

LIMITED USER

Limited User licenses provide users full read but limited yet powerful write capabilities to all of the licensed solution functionality through any and all modes of access including the Windows Client. The Limited User license is designed to give you a lower-cost alternative for extending ERP to users who only need to perform limited task as defined in the Licensing Guide.

Increasing field lengths in Microsoft Dynamics NAV

Today, me any my team was working on a new addon design and one of my teammate got a call from NAV 2015 client. Their query was to check whether if we can increase the length of the External Document No.
So my colleague asked me that whether we should do that for them.

I said try it and see...

My view point is is that we should never change the length of a default field in Dynamics NAV. I have seen many developers at the very early stage of their carrier, they try to change the length of the fields. This includes me as well, I still remember how I change the length of the Document No of the General Journal line and Sales Header and how I worked hard to overcome that mistake I have done.

But it helped me to learn lot about NAV and actually it tested me during that time, because it was my first assignment. So I won't say don't do it. All I am saying is do it in a test database and learn the mistake that you are doing.
Because it is always good to learn from your mistakes.

Report Scheduling - Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 - Part 01

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 is now allowed users to schedule the reports. With the use of report scheduling in NAS, user can achieve following,
      1. Schedule resource intensive reports at the time of less usage of the server
      2. Run reports on the NAV server (NAS), instead of the client (Client machine should not equipped with high end resources)
      3. Save the report in desired format.
      4. Save the resultant reports for later viewing.
At the initial stage, a job queue need to be configured in order to run the report in the background. Also user should add the report inbox to the Role Center, so that job queue generated report can be transferred to the report inbox for user access.
After the basic configuration is completed user need to select the schedule option in the report and fill the fields in the request page (Report Format, Time we need to have the report) for each report that he/she need to run in the background.

Once the report completed, it will automatically transferred to the report inbox in the Role Center where user can access the report.
This is very value added feature because it allows users use the system while a very time consuming and resource draining report running in the background.
From my second post of the "Report Scheduling" I will show you how schedule a report.

      Background Posting - Part 01

What is background posting : Very simply, you are passing your completed document to NAS server to do the posting for you.

What is the advantage of this : Since posting will happen in the background you will not have to face any screen freezing or will not have to tolerate the message of "Table is locked by another use, and try again later".

Can we track who posted the document : Yes! background posting uses a dedicated session to post the document and it post the document as been posted by the original user. Result of this at any given time we can track who posted the document.

      So here we go..

In default background posting is allowed only to post Sales and Purchase documents. Following document types support background posting,

      • Order
      • Invoice
      • Credit memo
      • Return order

Background posting uses job queue and in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013, job queue can be run directly through a user session or can be run through a dedicated NAS service.

Microsoft Dynamics 2013 use two separate codeunits to control the background posting.

      • For sales - codeunit 88 - "Sales Post via Job Queue"
      • For purchase - codeunit 98 - "Purchase Post via Job Queue"
If there is any error in the posting, it will notify back to the user who initiated the posting.
In default notification is only used to inform if there is a error in the posting, however it is possible to turn on the notification for successful jobs as well.

You can see the notification from your home page or from the order and invoice list pages.

Since job queue  are used in background posting, following things can be achieved,
      1. Can run many job queues with selection criteria per company
      2. Can run more than one job queue on the server at the same time
      3. Jobs will run with the user's permission and no special security is required.
From the next post lets discuss about how to setup background posting.
